'Greengates by RC SHerriff describes the agony of retirement, two strangers forced to confront an inevitable demise. But for me their new house is a metaphor of hope: it is an impossible dream but it unites them and each undergoes a metamorphosis. They discover that happiness is made from the small simple rituals which make pleasures of living. I recognised their story reflected in so much of life and understood them with genuine compassion. This is what a good book should do.'
