'The chilling and brilliant short novel, The Victorian Chaise-longue, is a rare instance of what one could call Gothic realism. Marghanita Laski’s time-travelling heroine, having bought a Victorian chaise in a second hand shop,  finds herself trapped in a time before women had any freedoms.  She has been metamorphosed into a dying consumptive who has sinned against her time’s conventions. Of course, there’s a doctor in the frame and a wicked or should one say all-too-proper older sister.  This is a must read by a writer who deserves to be remembered.'
